Day 337 of 365 Day Jamaican Music Challenge - Flip Kay - Duppy Laugh
Flip Kay is up next in the 365 Day Jamaican Music Challenge and it's very much in keeping with the spooky. This one is called "Duppy Laugh" and it is the b-side of "Duppy Bawl" a record Kay cut in the UK with producer Danny Ray and released in 1976 on the Doctor label. Both sides of this disc are pretty upright covers of the Levi Williams classic "Duppy Jamboree" that he did for George McLean and Mighty Cloud Records a couple years before. The content of the song, describing the strange duppy (or ghost) funeral taking place along the riverside and witnessed by an innocent bystander just looking to cool off in the water, is an absolute seasonal favorite and tends to sound better every time I throw it on the turntable!
